India to become a manufacturing hub for fashion & luxury goods

The Government pledged its support to the luxury and fashion goods industry to share and integrate the skills of Indian artisans and craftsmen with international expertise to make India a global hub for manufacturing luxury goods.

Inaugurating the function to launch the FICCI Lifestyle Forum here, Dr. Ashwani Kumar, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry said: “Education and employment will spawn such an initiative and I can envision fashion institutes from the West bringing their best practices to India. Business schools such as ESSEC of France have already initiated programmes with IIM Ahmedabad as FICCI did with SDA Bocconi of Italy and the National Institute of Design.”

Dr Ashwani Kumar said, skill integration with French ateliers and craftsmen to bring international expertise would help develop synergies with brands as well as generate employment. “We encourage this move towards skill integration and invite India indigenous brands to seek the right expertise, finance and skill integration from Western ateliers.”

He said, culture, craft, design and creativity, textiles and gems have been been India’s traditional heritage. It is recognised that India has pockets of lifestyle skills such as Jadau jewellery from Jaipur, the Kutch craft from Gujarat and diamond cutting from Surat. The Government of India will encourage these crafts to get corporatised and organised to spawn an indigenous lifestyle industry, he said.

Dr. Ashwani Kumar noted that India was fast moving away from being a backwater to ‘handmade-handcrafted in India’ tagline becoming solicited. “Our Ministry will support this initiative with business to business delegations of the FICCI Lifestyle Forum to hubs of fashion and lifestyle in France, Italy and the UK.”

Earlier, the Minister released the FICCI-Yes Bank report on ‘India as a Manufacturing Hub for Global Fashion and Luxury Goods.

Mr. Ness Wadia, Chairman, FICCI Lifestyle Forum, pointed out that the luxury brands should view the Indian market from two perspectives. One, skill transfer from luxury ateliers to Indian craftsmen and developing brand synergies with India, and two, policies conducive to enabling opening of doors to single brand retail and eventually multi-brand retail.

This will bring in its train employment and development of technologies in supply chain management and luxury retail management Eventually, this will be a catalyst for the development of Indian indigenous luxury brands for global fashion and luxury goods market, as interactive exchanges become more deep-rooted.

Mr. Jerome Bonnafont, Ambassador of France to India, said if India were to develop its luxury industry, it would do well to attract foreign brands. He, however, underlined the need for cent per cent assurance on quality, protection of Intellectual Property and know-how and high respect for corporate social responsibility.

Mr. Nick Steyn, Director, Walford Wilkie, London and Mr. Mehul Choksi, MD, Gitanjali Lifestyle & Co-Chairman, FICCI lifestyle Forum, shared their perspectives on brand creation and brand narrative where consistency in the quality of the messages and its position held the key.

Mr. Varun Tuli, President, Yes Bank, presented the findings of the FICCI-Yes Bank report. The need of the hour, he said, was for industry players to create a sophisticated business model supported by financial and legal footings, and for the government to develop the requisite infrastructure and offer the right incentives.

The history of IWC watches dates back to 1868 when an American by the name of Florentine Ariosto Jones founded a watch factory in Switzerland. After meeting Johann Heinrich Moser in 1850, the two teamed up to lay the foundations for the first and only watch manufacturers in north-eastern Switzerland. The International Watch CO. was up and running in Schaffhausen.

It was not until 1885 that the first digital watch for IWC was created, based on a patent from an Austrian named Pallweber. Despite the simplicity the watch maintained, it was a work of genius. To this day the work of the Pallweber’s is extremely rare and a large collector’s item.

From 1895 to 1900 IWC saw major sales increases all around. In Germany, the company saw an increase from 553,500 to 805,000 francs. Russia went from a measly 29,400 to an incredible 182,300 francs. These remarkable sales increases were due largely to the acumen of the company’s management as well as the incredible staff of employees.

After years of ups and downs, 1974 saw a rise in gold prices by nearly 4 times the usual amount and as a result, the price of watch exports rose by as much as 250%. Despite this, IWC watches continued with their traditional watchmaking while surprising the watch industry with one innovation after another. It built up a sold line of top-quality pocket watches.

In 1978 the company launched its very first compass watch, which was followed by the ground-breaking introduction of titanium to be used in watches and cases. It was Otto Heller that was responsible for this remarkable change of direction that truly put IWC watches on the right path.

After years of remarkable service and craftsmanship, the company celebrated its 125th anniversary in style with 300 employees. And in the spirit of the celebration there were 1000 Portuguese watches with the 982 calibre pocket watch movements made in stainless steel, 500 in gold, and 250 in platinum.

Today the company continues to hold strong with innovative watches and remarkable services. In 2001, IWC watches went online with the Collectors forum. This was the first brand-related forum for fans of fine watchmaking. Sadly, the company also saw the death of Gunter Blumlein in 2001, who was the man that led IWC out of the Swiss watchmaking crisis of the 1970’s. Despite this, the company has never been stronger and continues its excellence in crafting watches through an incredible team.

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) says that many people deeply regret not taking out travel insurance. They think their credit card accident cover, home insurance, or private health cover is sufficient. The reality is that you do not have appropriate travel insurance and you suffer serious injury or lose valuable possessions you will face harsh financial consequences.

The FCO has guidelines for what your insurance should cover in the event of an emergency or other problems you may experience while on holiday.

The real cost when things go wrong. An emergency abroad can be extremely expensive. If you need to be returned to the UK it could cost you thousands of pounds, unless you are adequately insured:

* £30-35,000 – air ambulance from USA’s East coast

* £12-16,000 – air ambulance from the Canary Islands

* £15-20,000 – scheduled flight, stretcher and Doctor escort from Australia

What should my travel insurance policy cover?

* medical and health cover for an injury or sudden illness abroad – more information on medical and health cover page

* 24 hour emergency service and assistance

* personal liability cover in case you’re sued for causing injury or damaging property

* lost and stolen possessions cover

* cancellation and curtailment (cutting short your trip) cover

* extra cover for activities that are commonly excluded from standard policies, such as jet skiing.

The policy should cover the whole time that you’re away.

Your policy may also have:

* personal accident cover

* legal expenses cover

* financial protection if your airline goes bankrupt before or during your trip.

Many insurers will extend cover if you ask them. If not, shop around for a specialist policy.

Common travel insurance policy exclusions

Always check the conditions and exclusions of your policy:

* most policies will not cover drink or drug-related incidents

* you must take reasonable care of your possessions or your policy will not cover you.

Travel insurance buying tips

* shop around to find a good price and the right product rather than opting to travel without cover

* cheaper policies will usually have less cover – for some the price seems most important, but is it worth the initial saving?

* consider annual multi-trip insurance if you make several trips a year – you’ll save time and money.

Cancelling or cutting a trip short

A good insurance policy will cover you for cancelling or cutting a trip short. Check carefully to see exactly what you’re covered for:

* accident

* illness

* pregnancy (unknown when you buy the policy)

* jury service or witness summons

* home emergency: fire, storm or flood, burglary

* redundancy

* strikes

* bad weather – affects the departure of flights and ships.

Ensure your policy:

* will refund the full cost of your holiday

* pays out if you need to cancel or cut short a trip because you fall ill for example

* covers pre-paid expenses such as excursions

* covers extra costs incurred to get home

And try to book through an agent that’s with the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), Air Travel Organisers’ Licencing (ATOL) or other credible Financial Protection Organisations.

Personal liability insurance

If you accidentally cause an injury to someone or damage their property they may sue you. Good travel insurance will cover you for personal liability.

Personal accident cover – disability and death

Travel insurance can cover a personal accident payment made for permanent disability or death.

Cover for stolen, lost or damaged possessions

You can normally choose the limit in your policy. Limits for single items such as cameras and jewellery can vary from as little as £250 up to £1000 or more. Check these limits are adequate and realistic.

You should report a loss to the Police within 24 hours. Proof of notification will be required when you make your claim.

All insurance policies say that you must take care of your belongings at all times. If you don’t, the policy may not pay out.

Tip: take as much care of your property as if it were uninsured.

Lost baggage on flights

Do not rely on compensation from an airline if it loses your luggage.

By law, airlines only have to pay a specified minimum value per kilo of lost luggage. This is unlikely to cover the full value of your things.

Legal expenses cover

Taking out legal expenses cover will help you to pursue compensation or damages following personal injury while you’re abroad – very important in countries without a legal aid system.

EHIC – European Health Insurance Card

Get a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for healthcare in European countries. Understand what it does and doesn’t cover you for.

Medical health insurance

Financial protection for holidays

Don’t get stranded abroad without a refund when your holiday company goes bankrupt – know what protection exists for you.

Credit card protection

Information on the financial protection offered to credit and debit card users.

You want to give your sweetie something sparkly this Valentine’s Day. Maybe it’s even time to pop the question. Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, of course … unless the girl cares about funding wars in Africa and wearing a reminder of bloodshed and poverty on her finger, that is.

Unfortunately, the modern symbol of love is also a token of terrible tragedies. If you’re looking to buy with a clear conscience, you’ll want to do a little research before you’re beguiled by the brilliance.

During the 1990s, money from selling diamonds financed several vicious civil wars in African countries. Military warlords and rebel groups alike mined diamonds to buy weapons in Sierra Leone, Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Liberia. Diamonds from Republic of Congo and Côte d’Ivoire were also used to fund wars in neighboring countries.

These gems became known as conflict diamonds or blood diamonds. Global Witness estimates that up to 15% of all diamonds sold around the world in the late 1990s were conflict diamonds.

The United Nations imposed an embargo on non-government-certified diamonds from Angola in 1998 and did the same for Sierra Leone diamonds in 2000.

In 2003, the United Nations, over 70 countries, and the international diamond industry launched the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme. This voluntary system is supposed to track rough diamonds from the mine to the retailer and ensure that they are conflict-free and legitimately traded.

In addition, the U.S. created several laws such as the Clean Diamonds Act to ban importation of rough diamonds that are not certified by the Kimberly Process. The U.S. is the world’s largest consumer of diamond jewelry — we bought $33.7 billion worth in 2005! But most of what we import are cut and polished stones, according to Global Witness.

While the Kimberly Process has made strides, it also has weaknesses that have been exploited. Some conflict diamonds are still getting onto the market, although thankfully in small numbers. Partnership Africa Canada reports how Côte d’Ivoire continues to launder blood diamonds through other countries and how lack of monitoring keeps retailers from always knowing what they’re selling.

So how are we supposed to know what we’re buying for our loved ones? You’ll have to ask the jeweler some questions, and be prepared to shop around. The Conflict-Free Diamond Council has useful guidelines to consider when looking for a diamond.

Download Amnesty International’s diamond buyer’s guide (PDF) for handy questions to ask your diamond retailer.

To learn more about specific stores, check out the charts from Global Witness and Amnesty International. These PDFs give details about businesses’ conflict-diamond policies and what monitoring organizations they belong to. You’ll find everyone from Wal-Mart to Saks Fifth Avenue included.

You can look up the conflict-free diamond statements of some big-name stores online, such as Tiffany, Ben Bridge Jewelery, and Zales.

Blue Nile, Whiteflash, and James Allen Professional Jeweler are among the many online retailers who sell conflict-free diamonds in accordance with the Kimberly Process.

Some folks prefer diamonds mined in Canada. The CanadaMark certification guarantees that the diamonds are from the Great White North, which is, of course, far from ugly wars.

However, Canadian diamonds aren’t perfect for the environment either. Mining Watch points out that northern diamond mines damage delicate ecosystems and animal habitats. These operations have also disrupted the lives of indigenous people in Canada.

One of the most eco-friendly options is to recycle jewelry. For example, Green Karat uses recycled gems in its designs. This not only ensures that your diamond is free of taint, but it doesn’t hurt the environment with messy mining practices.

Similarly, vintage jewelry from before the 1990s neatly avoids conflict and harm to the planet. If you insist, you can always have the stone removed from an old setting and placed into a ring, necklace, etc., of your own design. Jewelers do this frequently when heirlooms are inherited but styles change. Search antique stores in your town or troll eBay for deals.

A day at the races can be a fun and exciting day out. It can be a perfect excuse to dress up in your fanciest clothes and strut your stuff whilst betting on a horse or two. Of course like many things a day at the races would be no fun on your own. In fact the more the merrier. Why not invite all your friends or make it a work event? The races is a day where everyone can have fun.

Most people are unaware of what happens on a day at the races. Well it all begins with the outfit. Most men will wear a suit or even a hat and tails. This is a chance for them to dress up like real gents. The women however will probably spend months in advance thinking about what to wear or buying new outfits because it’s never just the dress, oh no it’s the shoes and the bag and the jewellery, you get the idea. Then you have to get there. The best way is probably by private coach hire or mini bus. You can fit in as many people as you need and all travel together. Others use limo’s however these can be expensive and limit you to how many people. Coaches have the added advantage of a wash room which can be very useful on the way back if you have been drinking champagne all day!

When you’re at the racecourse itself you can either spend the day betting on horses or drinking champagne. Some people even do both. If you’re the drinking type, head for the champagne tent. If you’re the betting kind then you can walk around and take a look at the horses. See which one takes your fancy. It’s always worth asking questions to the bookies or horse handlers, you never know where you may get a helpful tip from. Then, once you’ve placed your bet, head to your seat to watch the race but be sure to arrive nice and early so you don’t get stuck at the back! There are usually TV screens up but there is nothing more thrilling than seeing your horse come in first with your own eyes.

If all that racing has made you peckish then it must be time for lunch. A lot of people take picnics and enjoy sitting on the grass (most racecourses don’t allow chairs and tables in so make sure you check before you go) in their dresses and suits whiling away a sunny afternoon. Make sure to have plenty of drink and fluids because it can be a long day. If picnic is not to your taste there are always food outlets that you can buy some lunch from.

So next time you think about having a social event why not make it a day at the races. It’s not just for the hoi palloi of England or aristocracy, anyone can join in! What could be a better way to spend time with your friends and have a good time?

Jewelries are good accessories, collections and even an investment that will last. It is often used as an ornament that enhances one’s outfit but at the same time it can serve as a family heirloom. It can be passed in the succeeding generations because it’s value and beauty do not depreciate.

Germs and dusts can easily form on the exterior of your jewels . It can build up on your necklace or rings. Proper cleaning of your jewelries is an important factor in preserving and restoring it’s beauty. Below are some tips on how to clean your these precious items

1. For silver pieces, you can use a soft tooth brush and a mild soap. Simply brush the piece of jewelry to remove any debris. Use a running tap water to rinse and a soft cloth to buff and shine it.

2. As an alternative cleaning solution for silver pieces, there are several dips and solutions available where you only need to soak your jewel piece in the solution and it will remove the stains. You must exert extra effort on paying attention to the solution’s instruction because leaving it on for too long can damage your jewel or if you do not rinse it properly, residues might build up.

3. Do not to soak silver jewelries in solutions that contain ammonia because it can damage the jewelry.

4. For Gold jewelry rings, greasy film can build up and make it unattractive. These greasy films often come from body lotions and creams that we use and skin oils also add up to this.

5. For pieces of gold or platinum jewelries, mix a mild soap or washing up liquid with warm water in a bowl. Soak the jewelry in this solution for several minutes to soften the debris or oil that build up on the exterior. Then, remove the gold or platinum jewelry and use a soft brush to scrub and clean the item.

6. For platinum jewelries, you can ask the assistance of professional jewelers.

7. For jewelries with diamonds, soak it in a soft washing detergent then brush gently with a soft brush, because using a hard bristled brush can damage some jewelry.

Cleaning your jewelries properly can help you maintain and restore the beauty that it rightfully posses.

David Simonian, CFO, explained some of the problems Simmons experienced running an old, non-integrated Dbase system. “Each department had its own mini-system. The same data was entered multiple times—engineering, purchasing, job costing, and accounting. It was very difficult to extract any meaningful information to run the business,” he said.

Simmons had known about Encompix for several years. “We looked at Encompix many years ago, but were not ready to buy at that time,” said Simonian. “We were impressed with the company’s background—especially the fact that the product was designed for engineer-to-order manufacturer’s. We looked at other products, but it became clear that they all had some shortcomings. Encompix was the only one that could provide all the things we were looking for.”

Founded in 1910, Simmons Machine Tool Corporation specializes in designing and building special machine tools for the wheelset, wheel and axle maintenance workshops of railways, metros, and transits worldwide. Located in Albany, N.Y., Simmons Machine Tool Corporation is a member of the NSH Group, which was created in 2000 by the consolidation of Niles- Simmons, and Hegenscheidt-MFD in Germany.

Simonian is looking forward to the benefits Encompix will bring. “The biggest benefit is that everyone will be using the same real-time information. For example, when we hold our production control meetings in the future, we will be able search for any information we need without having to run off and create a report. Data accuracy also will improve. Part numbers and descriptions will be entered once, and called the same thing throughout the organization.”

Encompix (www.encompix.com) a business unit of Made2Manage Systems, has filled the manufacturing software requirements of engineer-to-order companies since 1992. The company name reflects a commitment to developing business application solutions that encompass the complex areas of project-based and job-based manufacturing. Encompix provides ETO manufacturers with a competitive advantage by improving bottom line results.
